TCE Pumpkin Contest

On October 22, 2010 our class won 3rd place in the TCE Pumpkin Contest! Every year each classroom participates in decorating a pumpkin to represent a character in their favorite book. This year we chose Is This A House for Hermit Crab? by Megan Mcdonald. Each child had the opportunity to help design our pumpkin to look like a hermit crab. They had fun and I think you'll agree that they did a Fin-tastic Job!

Making a Marsh

In science we are learning about the different habitats in GA. Our first lab was to create a replica of a marsh to show that the purpose of a marsh is to clean the water. If we didn't have marshes, our environment and drinking water would be affected. The students enjoyed our first lab and they worked very well with their lab partner. We would like to know if you had a favorite science experiment that you would be willing to share with us.

How to Eat Fried Worm

We finished reading How to Eat Fried Worms, explored with worms in science, built a worm compost, measured and observed worms, watched the movie How to Eat Fried Worms, and today Mrs. Walton even made us fried worms to eat. All enjoyed dipping them into hot sauce, ketchup, or spicy mustard. Have you ever eaten fried worms? We would love to hear about your experience.

Creating A Compost Pile

One of the activities related to Earth Day and apart of our Science Standards for 3rd grade was to learning about and to build a compost pile. We have successfully built a compost pile by the bus ramp at TCE. The recipe to build a compost pile is: some brown stuff,(dead leaves, pine straw,)some green stuff,(fresh grass clippings, green leaves)and food(leftover fruits and vegetables, coffee grounds, egg shells, air, and water). The end result of a compost pile is to eventually have humus (rich soil)

SOAR Student of the Month

Daryus
Our trip to Seabrook Village was enjoyed by all. We made a broom, went on a hayride, sat in the old schoolhouse, pumped water, washed clothes without a washer, and sang while we made butter. It was hot and the bugs were very bad, but we had a great time!

CRCT

We spent this week taking the CRCT-Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests. The CRCT is designed to measure how well students acquire the skills and knowledge described in the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS). The children worked very hard this week and came in each day with a positive attitude. Our message this week was to HOPE for success and to BELIEVE in yourself. All we need to do now is to wait for the results!
We interviewed a few student to see how they felt taking the CRCT and to see if they had some advice for next years students.

Earth Day

This week we talked about Earth Day (April 22nd). We decided that Earth Day should be celebrated everyday! Some of the ideas the children shared for helping the Earth were: clean up trash, recycle, reduce the use of water/electricity, and reuse plastic bottles. One of the activities that we did this week was to design a reusable cup to get the message out about saving the Earth! Let's all work together to make tomorrow beautiful!

In the comment space below, please share a way that you can help save the Earth.
